Rabbit Hole

Welcome to the secret archives!

The Rabbit Hole is a space created off the beaten path of Hochbaum's website in order to share some of the many projects Hochbaum is a part. Some of these projects are not directly related to those of the fine art that he is most know for and associated with.

David is a multifaceted artist with a deep passion for collaboration and long a history of involvement with music and film. So much of this inspiration can be found in his 2-D and sculptural works but in order to get a full scope of the artist's lexicon, the studio thinks it is important to share these windows into what goes on within the periphery of his paintings. Here you will find the obscure collections of music, early works, collaborations, installations, and photography documenting some of David's numerous installations and exhibitions from around the world. Welcome to the secret archives!

GOLDMINE SHITHOUSE

GOLDMINE SHITHOUSE

GMSH is a collaboration project started by artists David Hochbaum, Colin Burns and Travis Lindquist in 2003.

Very long story short, the group created installations of collaborative art and music throughout the USA and parts of Europe. The GMSH spontaneous on-site marathon approach of multimedia art shows left an undeniable trail of inspiration and hundreds of artworks in it their wake. This is a curated collection from the library of hundreds of images and videos. It is a small archive of the works, installation shots as well as images from the infamous GMSH silkscreen parties from the mothership on 2nd Ave in the East Village to installation projects around the globe.

Babel

Babel

BABEL is the title of a music project Hochbaum started in 2018. Some of the tracks were made to accompany his video projects. Sometimes when David feels blocked and unable to express himself through his paintings, music is an outlet that motivates and ensures his creative flow. He sees the songs like sketches, studies, or soundtracks for his paintings. The artist has a long history of making music and he continues to use that process as one of the tools for creating his visual work. Hochbaum refers to his sound as "goth death metal discotheque soundtrack"music. All the songs are made using just a 6th generation iPad and a pair of iPhone plugin earbuds. Much like his spontaneous approach to painting and collage, the majority of his vocal tracks are one take, made up on the spot recordings. Some of his major influences include Skinny Puppy, Nick Cave, Joy Division, David Bowie, Bauhaus, The Pixies, David Lynch, Aphex Twin, Cocteau Twins, Loop, and Sonic Youth, just to name a few. This is a curated and fluctuating collection of his tracks.
